The Argentine goalkeeper was signed from Boca Juniors for the season 2006/07. Under Bernd Schuster, Abbondanzieri was awarded the Zamora Trophy for the least-scored goalkeeper in La Liga, a prize awarded by the Marca newspaper. Pato' was a member of the team in the two Copa del Rey runners-up. In January 2009 he returned to his home club.
